February 7th, 2024, 7:00am

Did you know that wood, one of our most ancient building materials, is now at the forefront of architectural and environmental innovation? Join us for an insightful presentation introducing you to the world of Wood and Mass Timber Construction.

Title: “Innovations in Wood Construction from the Forest to Structure”

Introduction to WW/CWC and Mass Timber Construction:
Dive into the innovative use of wood as a primary construction material. Exploring the various Mass Timber products and seeing real life project examples including Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), Glulam (GLT), and other mass timber products. Understand how these new wood-based product types are reshaping the landscape of modern construction.

CWC and Sustainability:
This part of the presentation will describe how climate change is influencing sustainability provisions in current and future Buildings Codes and Standards. Learn about how climate change adaptation and mitigation is being addressed in upcoming National Building Code and CSA standards provisions, as well as emerging initiatives on reducing the environmental impact of buildings. This session will highlight the pivotal role wood has in a sustainable built environment.

Fire and Building Code Implications on Wood:
This seminar will discuss the fire-related national building and fire code changes related to a new construction type called Encapsulated Mass Timber Construction (EMTC) to be used for wood buildings up to twelve storeys. As well, it will provide an overview of ongoing changes and future changes to the current EMTC provisions.

Speakers:

Rory Koska has led the Wood WORKS! Alberta program for over 14 years and has brought the program through many milestones. The Alberta regional program has evolved into a conduit between industry innovation and the design community. Under Rory’s direction the Wood WORKS! Alberta program has established itself an invaluable resource for communities and the construction industry interested in building with wood.
Natasha Jeremic is Manager of Sustainability in the Codes and Standards group at the Canadian Wood Council. She is engaged in strategic building code and standards initiatives related to sustainability, circularity, and durability. Natasha leverages her experience in structural design, building performance, and whole life carbon accounting to demonstrate how wood products are a viable solution for a sustainable and low-carbon built environment.
Marc Alam is a member of the Canadian Wood Council. As Senior Manager, Codes and Standards in fire and acoustics, Marc assists through participation in CWC’s building code and standards fire and acoustic related initiatives and the development of CWC’s fire design tools, as well as code-related fire and acoustic research projects.
